Ellen Greenberg’s lifeless body with 20 stab wounds was discovered by her boyfriend in 2011. However, the Medical Examiner had adjudged after investigation that it was not a case of homicide but suicide.
For years Ellen Greenberg’s parents were carrying out a campaign to change the ruling back into homicide and hoping for a trial for their daughter’s death in 2011.
Their efforts bore fruit and Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office is reopening the case to ascertain the cause of death more than 14 years after she was found stabbed to death in her Manayunk apartment.
Philadelphia Officials Reopen Investigation Into Ellen Greenberg’s Mysterious 2011 Death
The reopening of the investigation into the teacher’s death was possible after an agreement between the family of Ellen Greenberg and Philadelphia officials.
The death of Ellen Greenberg was back in the news after the medical examiner who had ruled that Ellen’s death was a homicide but later changed it into a suicide now stated that he believed the death was something other than a suicide.
It’s a big win for the Greenberg family who had been pursuing the fight to reopen the investigation and alleged that their daughter was murdered and the officials are trying to cover up their botched investigation.
Ellen Greenberg who was a 27-year-old teacher resided in the Manayunk neighborhood of Philadelphia. Her lifeless body which bore 20 stab wounds was discovered by her boyfriend on January 26, 2011. Ellen was found slumped against the cabinets and a 10-inch knife was lodged in her chest. Her body had 20 stab wounds and many of the wounds were inflicted on her back and neck.
It was this discovery which led the medical examiner to declare that it was a case of homicide. However, the police publically challenged the findings and the medical examiner, Philadelphia pathologist Marlon Osbourne reclassified her death as suicide.
The Greenbergs tried to change the classification of the death as a suicide into homicide. However, the city objected and contended that the medical examiner could be wrong but it is not possible to compel him to change his conclusions.
In December 2024 the Greenbergs again filed a lawsuit accusing the city of Philadelphia of labeling Ellen’s death a suicide to cover a botched homicide investigation.
On Friday the judge ruled that the Greenbergs could take the Philadelphia city officials to trial and also ordered Philadelphia pathologist Marlon Osbourne, another medical examiner Sam Gulino and homicide detective John McNamee to testify at the civil trial.
