When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 5 Review: The Summer Filled With Happiness

When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 5 begins the next part of Ae-sun and Gwan-sik’s life after they help each other break free from suppression and begin a new journey. As Summer slowly begins, a new chapter begins in the couple’s life as they get help from the unexpected.

The series has 16 episodes and will be released from 7th March 2025 to 28th March 2025, releasing four episodes every Friday.

When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 5 Recap

Gwan-sik helps Ae-sun break free from his toxic family while Ae-sun rushes to save him from his boss who is deliberately harming Gwan-sik, however, the result of these heroic acts brings another set of troubles for the couple. With the couple offending the local leader Sang-gil, it becomes hard for Gwan-sik to board a boat and go fishing. Ae-sun is saddened to see the hardworking person wither away due to no work and tries to get help from her grandmother.

As she begs in front of the old woman, her uncle tells her they have nothing for her and even shouts at his mother to just hand over her gold ring if she wants to help Ae-sun. Ae-sun is saddened as another door closes for her and returns home with her broken pride. Later that night, her grandmother arrives at her door and hands her a bank book, telling her to use the money to buy a boat. 

Ae-sun is shocked by this and almost refuses until her grandmother reveals that this is what she promised Ae-sun’s mother before she passed away. Ae-sun’s mother had desperately pleaded to her mother-in-law to help Ae-sun just once if she ever came to her for help. She believes that her daughter wouldn’t come to her grandmother unless she has no other choice and wishes that the one-time Ae-sun does come to her, she would help her.

Fulfilling the promise, the grandmother hands over the money to the couple and wishes them luck for the future, while the young couple also promise to work hard and live a happy life. With this, Gwan-sik buys a boat and finally goes out into the sea to fish and earn for their family. But on the day when they inaugurate the boat, Ae-sun goes into labour and gives birth to a baby boy.

Soon, the couple’s days begin to get better as their family too expands. While Ae-sun spends most of her time pregnant, Gwan-sik works hard and finally buys Ae-sun’s mother’s house for them to live in. Ae-sun is moved by this gesture as they finally have a house of their own, and that night, she once again goes into labour and gives birth to another boy. 

As the happy days continue, local elections are held and Ae-sun becomes the deputy chief of the town while Sang-gil is the deputy. Ae-sun once again sees the situation of Sang-gil’s wife who tells her daughter to find a husband like Gwan-sik. Later that night, Gwan-sik sees his wife and daughter on the shore while he and his sons are on the boat. He calls for Ae-sun to board the boat and repaint the names on it but Ae-sun declines, fearing the superstitions. But when she sees Geum-myeong boarding the boat, she is unable to stop her daughter and lets go of the superstitions as the two board the boat. 

With happy days finally settling into the couple’s life, another happy Summer comes to an end.

When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 5 Review

This show cannot get any cuter, heartwarming, smooth, and entertaining for the audience. Once again, the actors all deliver another spectacular performance, giving us the best experience that they have to offer. While the couple steps into another chapter in their life, we see another round of struggles that they bear through in order to bring the best to their children. 

Gwan-sik’s unemployment was a tough time for the couple, but they made it through with their resilience and trust in each other. Gwan-sik’s love for Ae-sun is known by all, but Ae-sun’s love and devotion for her husband are silent yet strong, which is why she is ready to let go of her pride to help him in any way possible.

As an older Ae-sun recounts these days when shopping with her daughter, you can see the fleeting sight of a young woman with dreams who found happiness because of a man as good as Gwan-sik. She found happiness because of a partner who never let her suffer for long, making us think about what real happiness and fulfilment in life really are.

This couple continues to amaze me, this show continues to amaze me, and I am ready for all that this show is bringing to us each week.
